67 Containers Fall from Mississippi in Port of Long Beach

On 9 September, 67 containers fell from the Zim-chartered vessel Mississippi while it was moored at Pier G in the Port of Long Beach, according to Seatrade Maritime.

Some of the containers landed on a clean air barge moored alongside, while others dropped into the water. Local media footage showed stacks collapsing on deck and containers floating in the harbor. Merchandise including shoes and apparel was reported drifting near the port.

The Port of Long Beach said a unified command was established, involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Long Beach Fire Department, Harbor Police, Army Corps of Engineers, and port officials. A 500-metre safety zone was set up around the vessel, and operations at Pier G were suspended.

AIS tracking shows the Portugal-flagged Mississippi arrived from Yantian, China, on the morning of the incident. The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, and recovery operations are ongoing.

No injuries were reported.
