The Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Swift Hangzhou has been detained in Gladstone anchorage after weeks of engine-related distress off Australia’s east coast.
The 79,343-dwt vessel departed Gladstone on January 31 bound for South Korea but soon reported propulsion problems. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) placed a maritime casualty officer onboard and coordinated a month-long monitoring operation.
Four emergency towing vessels were deployed to prevent the ship from drifting toward the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, while AMSA maintained 24-hour oversight to protect the crew and environment.
Now secured at anchorage, the vessel has been formally detained over seaworthiness concerns and must complete verified repairs before being cleared to sail.
