Engine Fire Onboard RoRo Carrier Finnwave of the UK Coast

The 14 500dwt RoRo carrier Finnwave experienced an engine fire followed by loss of power in the early moring hours on November 12.

Rescue Vessel was Dispatched

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) reported receiving a distress call at 5:00am local time. As the conditions at sea was moderate with force five winds and the subsequent loss of power, a decision was made to dispatch a rescue vessel.

According to RNLI, the crew was able to eliminate the fire threat, but were not able to restart her engines. The rescue vessel remained on standby, while the crew on the carrier started anchor operations, which took an hour due to the weather conditions.

Successfully Restared the Engines

ShipAtlas historical data shows that the incident happened roughly 19km of the UK coast in the English channel. Finnwave, operated by Finnlines, was on its way from Rosslare Harbour, Ireland when the emergency happened. While there has been no updates since the incident, data shows that the carrier most likely was able to restart its engines while at anchor, as its now moored in Zeebrugge, Belgium.

RNLI reported no injuries.

Finnwave is a steel twin screw motor vessel built in 2012 by Jinling Shipyard, Nanjing, China as a Roll-On/Roll-Off cargo vessel.
