Engine manufacturer Everllence has completed the world’s first conversion of a B&W S90 two-stroke engine to dual-fuel methanol operation, installing the system aboard COSCO Shipping Libra. A 20,000 + TEU container vessel. The former single-fuel 11S90ME-C engine was upgraded to an 11S90ME-LGIM (Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) unit following successful sea trials.
The retrofit was executed by Everllence’s PrimeServ division in close collaboration with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry and encompassed full engineering, project management, installation and commissioning. The conversion project builds on an earlier test-bed trial in Japan, where Everllence validated methanol combustion performance under realistic load conditions.
According to Michael Petersen, Senior Vice-President and Head of PrimeServ Denmark, the milestone “opens a practical pathway toward accelerating the maritime energy transition” by showing that large-bore S90 engines can be adapted to methanol at scale. With more than 300 vessels globally operating S90-class engines, the conversion significantly broadens retrofit potential for owners seeking near-term decarbonisation.
Everllence says it has already delivered 26 dual-fuel conversions and maintains a sizeable pipeline across alternative fuels. The company views the success of the S90 methanol conversion as a critical step in bridging existing fleet investment with emerging low-carbon fuels.
