According to a masters report from UKMTO, an vessel was approached by a small craft manned by three people in the early morning hours on the 7th of November. The vessel in question is the LNG tanker Al Thumama according to Vanguard Tech.
Al Thumama Continues her Voyage
The Al Thumama, buildt in 2008, is on its way from Ras Laffan, Qatar to Swinoujscie, Poland, according to ShipAtlas data. Data also showes a increase in speed to 19kts when the attempted hijacking occured. The incident took place approximately 528NM of the coast of Eyl, Somaila.
The master stated that their were able to outrun the small craft, which returned to its mother ship.
Increased PAG Activity in the region
This is the fourth unsuccessful hijacking in a week and falls in line with the increased Pirate Action Group (PAG) activity in the area. Stated by several media, the pirates use previously hijacked fishing boats as hubs to launch their small crafts.
