Sapphire Princess Recovers Five Bodies from Western Mediterranean, 80NM Northwest of Algiers

The Princess Cruises vessel Sapphire Princess recovered five bodies from the western Mediterranean on April 22 after a lifejacket was spotted in the water approximately 80 nautical miles northwest of Algiers, while the ship was en route from Cagliari to Cartagena.

The crew launched a rescue boat after sighting the lifejacket and recovered the five deceased individuals over approximately one hour. Princess Cruises confirmed the victims were not passengers or crew of the vessel. Sapphire Princess proceeded to Cartagena, where the bodies were handed over to authorities.

The incident is consistent with the ongoing pattern of migrant drownings in the western Mediterranean.
