Third Delta Tankers Vessel Attacked by Houthis in Red Sea
Greece’s Delta Tankers faced its third attack in the Red Sea today, marking the first confirmed Houthi strike in eight days.
The oil tanker Sounion came under fire from Houthi militants, who approached in two small boats, each carrying several individuals. A brief exchange of small arms fire ensued before the vessel was struck by three projectiles. The impact caused damage, smoke in the engine room, and a minor injury to one crew member. The vessel is reporting that it is not under command is in poor condition.
The attack occurred 77 nautical miles west of Hodeidah, Yemen, in the early hours. This incident follows a series of attacks on Delta Tankers-operated vessels, with the Delta Blue being targeted four times in 24 hours earlier this month. Fortunately, those earlier assaults, involving rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), caused no injuries or significant damage. Vanguard has suggested that Delta Tankers may be targeted due to its vessels’ recent calls in Israel, with the Delta Star visiting in July.
The ongoing attacks have prompted security firms like Vanguard and Ambrey to advise vessels in the region to maintain a safe distance from potential threats and to report any suspicious activity. These attacks have severely disrupted global trade, forcing many ships to avoid the Red Sea and Suez Canal, opting for longer routes around Africa.
