Salvage operation underway for burning oil tanker Sounion in the Red Sea
Yesterday afternoon, the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES confirmed on X that they have begun the salvage operation of the oil tanker Sounion (IMO 9312145).
In the early hours of Tuesday, October 1, 2024, two attacks were reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incidents are believed to be caused by Houthi forces based in Yemen.
The first incident occurred at 01:40 UTC, 64 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah (LOCODE: YEHOD), Yemen. The vessel's Master reported observing four splashes nin close proximity to the vessel, believed to be missiles or drones launched at the vessel. The Master reported they would continue to the next port of call
Just three hours later, at 05:00 UTC. the same vessel experienced a more direct threat when it was struck by an uncrewed surface vessel (USV), which punctured the number six ballast tank. The crew was reported safe and uninjured, and the Master confirmed that the ship was proceeding as planned.
Simultaneously, another vessel was attacked 97 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah (LOCODE: YEHOD), Yemen. At 04:15 UTC, the vessel was reportedly struck by a missile and sustained damage. The crew is reported to be safe.
