180+ Shipping Companies Throw Weight Behind IMO Net Zero Framework Ahead of Critical Vote

More than 180 shipping companies, members of the Getting to Zero Coalition, have formally expressed support for the IMO’s Net Zero Framework ahead of its expected adoption vote in October, according to Seatrade Maritime. The coalition cautions that non-support by IMO member states could bring “significant negative consequences” for the industry.

While acknowledging that achieving net zero will be challenging, the group says IMO regulation remains the most equitable and efficient path forward. It emphasizes that many of its member companies are already investing in alternative fuel capable ships and developing supply chains for cleaner fuels, moves they say will be undermined if adoption is delayed.

Moment of Decision in October

The IMO is preparing for an extraordinary meeting in October where it is expected to adopt the framework that was initially agreed at an earlier session in April 2025. The IMO’s Net Zero Framework includes mandatory emissions limits, a global fuel standard, and a mechanism for pricing greenhouse gas output.

The coalition warns that delay or diluted commitments could stall or reverse progress made in recent months, years in some cases, particularly for companies that have already placed orders for ships compatible with alternative fuels. Investment timelines, financing commitments, and infrastructure development are all sensitive to regulatory clarity.

Industry Stakes and Regulatory Signals

Support from this large number of companies sends a clear signal both to IMO member states and to markets: there is substantial industry momentum in favor of formal regulation. The coalition states that uncertainty over the framework’s fate is already increasing risk premiums for green ship projects.

At the same time, obstacles remain. Some classification societies, notably ABS, have called for a pause or “timeout” on the framework, citing concerns over readiness, fuel availability, and cost burdens. The balance between ambition and feasibility remains under negotiation.

Over 180 companies signing on to support the IMO’s Net Zero Framework underscores the urgency shipping cannot afford to ignore. As the vote looms, the industry is watching closely. Its future, quite possibly, depends on October’s outcome.
