Croatia Opens Rijeka Gateway as New Regional Container Hub

Croatia has officially transitioned the new Rijeka terminal, known as Rijeka Gateway, into full commercial service, with the first container ship docking post-trial operations. The project is part of a joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Group, featuring the largest private logistics investment in the history of the Port of Rijeka.

Infrastructure, Capacity and First Vessel Call

Maersk committed €380 million (about US$445 million) toward building a modern terminal including a 400-meter quay financed in part by a World Bank loan, new access roads, internal yards, a rail interface, and an intermodal terminal. Initial capacity is set at 650,000 TEU per annum. The first commercial vessel was the 15,000-TEU Al Jasrah, Liberia-flagged, arriving from Port Said, Egypt.

Technology, Expansion, and Strategic Role

The terminal is equipped with four remotely operated ship-to-shore cranes, 15 rubber-tired gantry cranes, two rail-mounted gantry cranes and 28 terminal tractors. All operations are managed via an integrated control centre, featuring automation and renewable energy systems. Plans are in place to extend the quay to 680 meters, pushing capacity above one million TEU once expansion is complete.

Rijeka Gateway is being included in the Gemini Cooperation route between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, linking East Asia with the Mediterranean and Adriatic, positioning Rijeka as a competitive alternative to larger Mediterranean transshipment hubs.
