Oceanbulk Linked to Boxship Comeback with New Feeder Orders in China

Greek shipping company Oceanbulk, controlled by Petros Pappas, is reportedly preparing a return to the container sector after an absence of seven years. Industry sources say the company has struck a deal for two 3,100 TEU class containerships at China’s Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, priced at around US $47 million each, with delivery expected between late 2027 and early 2028.

Currently, Oceanbulk’s fleet operates purely in the dry-bulk segment with five carriers listed. They have no containerships in service, according to shipping databases. The reported feeder orders turns out to be true it indicates a strategic realignment as the company diversifies beyond its traditional trade.

The potential decision comes amid a notable trend in the Greek shipping community this year, where several dry-bulk and tanker owners are shifting into the small-to-mid-size boxship market. Firms including Alberta Shipmanagement, Danaos, Capital Group, Minerva Dry, Chartworld, Latsco Shipping and Euroseas have all placed similar orders in 2025.

While Oceanbulk and Pappas have not issued an official statement confirming the contract, the shipyard in Zhoushan has recently been gaining traction in the feeder box market. having secured deals from major players, including for LNG dual-fuel tonnage.
